About ManageThings.com Founder Peter McCormack

I’m currently a student of project management, but no longer ‘officially’. What I mean by that is I was studying project management via an online course which I had access to for a set period of time. The modules were supposed to take 2 hours each and it all seemed manageable, at first.

Studying Online Was A Pain In The…

It turned out the 2 hours only covered running through the interactive slides one after another, but did not include thinking about and absorbing the information. In total, it took between 3 and 4 hours to complete a module. Once a module was complete students are then given a test. The pass score was 75%, so if you got 74%, it was back to the races. That said, I usually scored pretty well (80%+), my biggest problem was a poor internet connection that often ceased to work during an exam.

Okay, so it was going to take more time than I first calculated, but the information was interesting and it’s a subject I quickly became passionate about. I started using some basic techniques in my online business and experienced the benefits of good (or sometimes mediocre) project management. :)

Back to the online course; I was starting to fall behind with the lessons, and time was pushing on. Then my focus shifted to work related issues and basically I dropped the ball and had to quit the PM course.

The End, Or Is It?

The ‘ball’ bounced back when my PMBOK guide arrived in the post, about a month after I ordered it (shipping issues. Argh!). I was a bit peeved at myself for not seeing the course through to the end and the book got shelved, but was never far from my mind.

Early in March 2011, I started leafing through the book and again my fascination in the subject ignited. I decided to carry on my studies, in my own way, in my own time, and with the book and Internet as my primary study resources.

Problem With The PMBOK Content

One problem I experienced while studying PM online and while reading the PMBOK guide is that the titles of many activities are similar, and while the language in the book is concise and focused, I found it sometimes hard to digest. My wife has also studied PM and we often discuss subject topics, and together tease out a better understanding of what the guide is trying to communicate. I find this immensely helpful and it dawned that I could further help myself, and possibly others students, to better understand the principles and practices of project management if I were to try explain the subject in my own words.

A Site Is Born!

That’s when I decided to start www.managethings.com. The initial idea was to deal with the subject of management broadly, as I find management in one disciple is so closely related to others, but at the moment my passion is study related to PM, and that’s this websites main focus. That may change as I become an experienced and grizzled PM, who knows?

Study Time

So I’m a PM student trying to make sense of this exciting and vast subject, and hopefully my experiences and ‘insights’ will be of some use to you too, as you build your own knowledge and understanding. Hopefully we can help eachother along in some way so if you want to talk shop drop me a line below and we can chew the fat.

Best of luck with your studies.

Peter.
